Was she, as Leonardo DaVinci's biographer insists, the wife of a wealthy merchant? Or was she, as an earlier title for the portrait suggests, a prostitute? Could the Mona Lisa even be a feminized self-portrait of Leonardo himself? Speculation aside, the most important fact is that centuries after her creation, the subtle smile of the Mona Lisa continues to provoke everything from passionate study to wild speculation.
